About Camp

William Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Aristophanes – community theatres often mine the classics for production choices, both because of their lasting impact on Western theatrical culture, and, let’s be real, because they are out of copyright and therefore rights-free. However, auditioning for these types of plays can seem daunting, due to dense language, complex vocabulary, and unfamiliar stylistic quirks. This four-session class takes a deep dive into the history of the eras of the theatre of antiquity, the early modern era, the Restoration, and the rise of naturalism, seeking to make the classics more approachable by contextualizing them within their original social and staging conditions. We’ll examine and discuss the history in conjunction with staged readings of representative texts from each era.
