About Camp

Designed by William W. Boyington and featuring Joliet limestone, Old Joliet Prison opened as the Illinois State Penitentiary in 1858 and housed inmates until 2002 when Joliet Correctional Center closed. This castle-like prison contained 24 buildings surrounded by 25-foot limestone walls, and housed infamous criminals like Leopold, Loeb and Gacy. The prison also housed some famous movie characters, including Joliet Jake Blues from The Blues Brothers. Get a glimpse of the prison's complicated history, including stories of overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, and many executions. Closed toe shoes are required as this walking tour will take place rain or shine. Lunch on your own at a local restaurant before the tour. Guided tour and transportation included. Joliet.
