The time will include meditations (both in movement and stillness), nature-awareness, and multiple opportunities to engage in reflection, inquiry, and connection. This offering will provide opportunities to learn new skills, freshen existing ones, and be in the present moment, during a time when many are experiencing transition, hardship, and "big" emotions. With continued uncertainty in our world, these practices are meant to support greater steadiness of body and mind.No experience with mindfulness experience is necessary. This session will follow CDC guidelines and UW Health screenings that are in effect at the time of the class session. Mask wearing and social distancing protocols will be required.Instructors:Gust Athanas, MS.Ed, NCC, NCSC co-teaches the Mindfulness for Middle Schoolers class for the UW Health Mindfulness Program. He has completed both the UW Health Mindfulness Program Teacher Training Practicum, and a year long teacher intensive through the Inward Bound Mindful Educator Teacher Training Program. He has learned so much from his students and their families over the past twenty years as a high school counselor. Gust would like to continue to share what he has learned about mindfulness with adolescents from all walks of life. He has a particular interest in the intersections of mindfulness, empowerment, and racial justice.Rachel Carlson, MAT, MS is deeply passionate about human flourishing. She is a graduate of Inward Bound Mindfulness Education's (iBme) year-long teacher training intensive and is a certified mindfulness teacher. Rachel has worked in education for over a decade designing programming and curricula, supporting teachers and school leaders, and more recently working in the education philanthropy space. When Rachel is not teaching mindfulness formally, she can be found practicing 'off the cushion' as a mama, wife, and human.
