About Camp

Painting PotsWhen do you decorate a piece of pottery by dipping it in a bucket of glaze? When do you apply the glaze with a brush? In this 8-week class we will emphasize painting, and make pots that benefit from brushing glazes. (And some pieces may work best with both painting and dipping.)We will make our own brushable glazes, beginning with known and tested glaze recipes and adding materials that create a smooth, brushable glaze, using a method created by Ted Hansen of Digitalfire. Different brushes and their various uses will also be discussed. We may find that many students take more naturally to brushing than to dipping a glaze, and those relatively new to pottery already have had years of experience in brushing. The other emphasis in this class will be creating underglazes, those wonderfully diverse-and expensive—ceramic materials that come in pint jars from the ceramic industry. Again, we will be making our own, in this case, using a recipe by Vince Pitelka, another expert in using ceramic materials. Mason Stains will be the primary color source. And these homemade underglazes will also be brushable.A lot of exploration with new materials in this class, and hopefully some new approaches and directions in our individual pottery making.Dates: January 17–March 7Times: 9:30am—12noon.Instructor: Steve BriggsExperience Level: Intermediate/AdvancedFees: $200.
