Handbuilding with Slabs, and Their Timely DecorationIn this 8-week class, we will work with soft slabs, both “slump” (slab inside the mold) and “hump” (clay over a mold). Clay Studio bisque molds will be used, in addition to wooden molds, plaster molds, and mold forms from home—say, a favorite tray or bowl. In the forming process, the slab pieces might receive handles, feet and lids. For finishing these pieces, we will go through each of the main categories of decorative techniques: slips, underglazes, glazes, stains and brushing glazes. Emphasis will be on relating these techniques to a particular time of the decorative process. For instance, slips are typically applied to leatherhard clay; stains usually applied over the glaze. But exceptions to these rules will also be shown.Dates: March 28-May 16Times: 9:30am—12noonInstructor: Steve BriggsFees: $200.
